Jacek Dominiczak, born 1954 in Gdansk, Poland, is an architect
and educator. He works on the dialogic architecture, its theory and design
methodology. He invented the Local Identity Code methodology for urban and
architecture design. The work was initiated in his doctorate at the Technical
University of Gdansk, Poland (1989) - the school where he graduated with
a M.A. (1978) and where he used to work between 1978 and 1991. Also, he
holds highier doctorate (habilitacja) in art (2007).
ACADEMIA
Recently he is affiliated with both Universidade da Beira Interior, Covilha,
Portugal, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk, Poland, where he leads
urban architecture studios.
He taught architecture and urban design in various schools
in both Europe and America. He was visiting professor at Carnegie Mellon
University, Pittsburgh, USA (1991, 1993-1997), University of Michigan, Ann
Arbor, USA (1992) and at Tec de Monterrey, Queretaro, Mexico (1998). He
was invited for lecture courses by the Warsaw University in Warsaw, Poland
(1999-2000) and by The Technical University of Gdansk Doctoral Program,
Poland (2005). He also lectured at Zacheta, The National Gallery of Art,
Warsaw, Poland (2004), at prestigious lecture series "What is Architecture?"
in Krakow, Poland (2003), Muthesius Hochschule, Kiel, Germany (2002), Ecole
Polytechnique Federale De Lausanne, Switzerland (1999), Staatliche Kunstakademie,
Stuttgart, Germany (1997), Fachchochschule Schwäbisch Hall, Germany
(1999, 2002, 2003), Kunstseminar, Freie Hochschule, Metzingen, Germany (1997)
and many other architecture and art institutions.
RESEARCH
Dominiczak coauthors (with Monika Zawadzka) the Fast Urban
Research (within SEAS project by Intecult, Stockholm), the studies on identity
of European seafront cities . Untill today the research has already included:
Skegness, UK (2009), Goteborg, Sweden (2009), Istanbul, Turkey (2009), Varna,
Bulgaria (2008), Odessa, Ukraine (2007), Constanta, Romania (2006), Stockholm,

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
Dominiczak, registered architect, practices architecture and urban design
as implementation of his own research works. In 2000 he has opened "architecture / dialog STUDIO jacek dominiczak".
The STUDIO latest key works include architecture and urban design Local
Identity Codes for: Fremantle, Australia (2007), Gdansk, Poland (2004 and
2002), Gdynia, Poland (2002). Also, he developed the codes for Pittsburgh,
USA (1995).
PUBLIC PRESENCE
The recent years' significant public presentation of Dominiczak's works
include: installation "Delay(er)ing
Façade" at 9. International Architecture Exhibition in Venice
(2004, Polonia Pavilion, together with Dominik Lejman, in cooperation with
Monika Zawadzka and Marek Zygmunt), and year-long publication of "Dialogic City", an essay
on architecture exteriority, in Architektura-murator, a key monthly architecture
journal in Poland (issues: 10.2002-9.2003).
He lives and works in Gdansk (Poland) and Covilha (Portugal).
