At the very entrance to the Venetian Arsenale one could hear the text
by Kurt W. Forster, the curator of the 9. International Architecture Exhibition.
Here is the passage from it which refers to the "crossroads around
1980" key books:
"During the 1970s and 1980s, journals fuelled debate and engaged
critical positions hitherto overlooked. A few key books focused attention
on past and present phenomena in light of the critical isssues of the moment:
Learning from Las Vegas by Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown and
Steven Izenour; Delirious New York by Rem Koolhaas and A Scientific
Autobiography by Aldo Rossi all enlarged personal experiences and reflections
to the scale of the expanding metropolis, whereas historical studies like
La sfera e il labirinto by Manfredo Tafuri and the semiotics of Roland
Barthes and Umberto Eco were tools eagerly adopted by architectural criticism."
The LECTORIUM BIENNALE is undertaking an effort to re-read the
books listed by Mr Forster. However, the lectorium will refer also to other
books by the same authors, when the dialogic perspective will require it.
We will not read all the books. Still, the following six texts are the
Fall 2004 & Spring 2005 semester's theme:
